Body stockingsHi...
I need the help of some fellow belly dancers here...I am fairly new to belly dancing but I am totally addicted:)
I have been making my own costume (well trying) so that should the day come that I am amazingly brilliant at it, and I decide to join in with a performance, I have something lovely and ready prepared to wear (I will be wearing it round the house when I am practiceing really hehe).
Well anyway...my question is where can I find a bodystocking? I would like to cover my flaws I have seen that 'see-fit' sell them but I have also found out that they can be a bit slippy? I have read that power mesh ones are good? I cant seem to find any on the net though. I would like a nude/flesh/tan coloured one.
I have tried google etc and you can imagine what sort of web sites keep popping up and I am finding myself trawling through pages.
Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Elizabeth

Hi Elizabeth, it may seem strange to get a reply from me on this one... me not being a dancer and a bloke to boot... but I may have something for you. Connie (my wife) bought a good one from http://www.sugarpetals.com/ in California and she tells me Siobhan did too. They're not cheap, especially with international postage but the dollar is down so that's good for us.
Also, Connie is trying one of Jacky Oruc's tips at the moment for a costume she's working on. That is to cut the legs off a pair of tights the right texture and colour. Now obviously, with tights that gives you the seams front and back instead of at the sides. The answer to that is to cut the crotch out, turn the top so the seams are at the sides and then sew the crotch back in so the unit doesn't ride up. Thinking about that... that sounds as though it would only work on a pair of heavy duty tights like Connie is planning to use... sewing regular tights material sounds a bit iffy... but I'm sure you could work something out.
I also remember that Karen Rastall of http://www.egyptiandancer.co.uk (Lincoln based) was talking about this subject more than a year ago, she may have found a supplier.
I'm going to JoY with Connie on 12th April so when I wander round and talk to the shops in the souk I'll keep my eyes open to see if anyone has any in stock.
Good luck!
Mark
(This thread has been copied to the new "Costuming Questions" forum as being an appropriate starter topic, please make any replies on that forum, thanks. )

Tight topsHi,
We used tights for tops for our American beauty/ Crystal method dance and they are a really cheap and easy way of creating a new costume. However, handy hint...use no less that 70 denier (as lighter ones tend to ladder whilst wearing!) and a good bra!

body stockingsHi anyone wanting body stockings already made, feel free to contact me I have an excellent supplier in Australia but they aren't cheap. They will however last a very long time and are of excellent quality. Shimmer net, matt or power net in nude or black are all available and I find them more comfortable than the ones from sugar petals who are of a similar kind of price range (perhaps a little cheaper). xx

Magic! For the uninitiated forum user, there's a button under Twinkle's post that says "www". If you click on it it will take you straight to Twinkle Toes' own web site and her shop.
Hurray!!! The forum's first result!!

If anyone's up to making their own body stocking Walton's Fabrics in Goldthorpe (see new listing on shops page of the website) has rolls of power net fabric in three colours at the moment, I think it was flesh, a sort of turquoise and black. Check before driving there 'cos stocks vary from day to day.

Hi all...thanks for all the handy tips.
I have just purchased some 4-way power mesh (skin colour) from ebay at £5.99 per metre £1.00 p&p, I will let you know what its like.

Another tip for the D.I.Y. sewing enthusiasts:
Connie made a body stocking from the top of a pair of heavy duty patterned tights (as described above). She sewed hooks onto the top section and eyes onto her favourite dance bra so now it's safe from falling down.
Then yesterday she had another bright idea and sewed the bottom to a pair of knickers! So now she has a very pretty patterned body stocking that shouldn't let her down...or up!

the home-stitched power mesh body suit is not going well
finally giving in I think and buying from Austalia only £12-13 I think so thats not too bad.
Thanks for all the tips

Thanks for the feedback Elizabeth. It's a pity about that but it was worth a shot and it sounds like you found a good price.

That's good and don't forget that if you cut the feet off those fishnet legs that are left over and sew up the end leaving holes for your fingers, you can use the legs as long gloves suitable for a Tribal costume.... so no waste at all!
